Napoleon, 1973
A bizarre early Beatleg, one of the first in a deluxe cover. Half is a mangled version of the Hollywood Bowl concert (with "Twist And Shout" repeated). Half is outtakes from Captain Beefheart, Buffalo Springfield, and The Who, with no Beatle content whatsoever. The label mentions Tony Sheridan for no apparent reason.

ReplyDeleteNapoleon, like the Joker label which released the Beatles / Stones album around the same time, was a legitimate recording label specialized in albums with hits covered by unknown bands and orchestras (Joker also had a huge catalog of its own with famous italian artists). This LP became quite rare very soon, now copies pop up on italian ebay (I never saw a copy myself since I started looking for bootlegs in 1980!).
I have this album. And till the late 70´s - early 80´s, you could still find them being sold in stores at major cities in Brazil. This record was the brain child of Brazil´s most hip rock n roll disc-jockey, Newton Duarte, known to all as Big Boy. On the back cover of this album, you have his name and a drawing of this face along with a small text written by the man himself. I believe the idea was to use the buying magnet that the name Beatles are and get people hip to these other acts. That´s what happened to me who through Captain Beefheart, discovered Frank Zappa (I know, most people go the other way around). Quality recording is not the finest, but in a sea of nothingness that was the rock bootleg scene in Brazil in the seventies, this was THE ONLY THING available at a decent price range. A lot of old timers such as myself think the world of Big Boy for it. Plus all the great rock n roll he taught us on his weekly radio shows. God bless him for it. RIP
