For Ed Sullivan + Peter Noone


On May 19th, 1966, The Beatles spent all afternoon at EMI Studio 1 videotaping promotional clips for both sides of their new single, "Paperback Writer" and "Rain". The mimed performances were aired on Ready, Steady, Go! and Goodbye Lucky Stars in the UK, and (with a special introduction) The Ed Sullivan Show in the US:



After a dinner break, they moved to Studio 3 to complete work on Paul's ballad "For No One", overdubbing bass, tambourine, and Alan Civil's French horn parts. Here is a 1983 "monitor mix" of the final take being played back from the multitrack, with various elements isolated:
