Unfinished Interview No. 2

On May 8th, 1969, BBC Radio's David Wigg went to Apple Corps to interview John and Yoko. 12 minutes of his interview was released on the 1976 LP The Beatles Tapes with David Wigg, but none of the material discussed the ostensible reason for the chat: John and Yoko's new album, released the following day, Unfinished Music No. 2: Life With The Lions.

Well, here is a previously unreleased extra four minutes of Wigg's recording from that day which rectifies the problem. John seems overly optimistic about the sales potential for his experimental albums:

I Don't Want To Go On The Cart!

In October, 1969, Paul McCartney found himself in the unenviable position of having to prove to the world that he wasn't dead. Despite being on holiday with his wife and newborn daughter in Scotland, he allowed BBC Radio reporter Chris Drake to visit the McCartney farm. The interview, conducted October 24th, was aired in fragments of different lengths on various news bulletins and programmes. Here is a composite recording of all known pieces, longer than what is included on Darthdisc's excellent Misshimmisshimmisshim set (Paul discusses some of the specific "clues"):

G'day Bruce!

As The Beatles pushed their way through the mob outside the Delmonico Hotel in the pre-dawn hours of August 28th, 1964, a zealous fan tore Ringo's St. Christopher medal from around his neck.

Since it had been a 21st birthday gift from his aunt, Ringo was eager to get the medal back, and WABC's Cousin Bruce Morrow and Dan Ingram helped him broadcast this plea for its return, offering the chance to meet Ringo as a reward.

It didn't take long for 16-year-old Angie McGowan to fess up, and along with a couple of friends, she was escorted up to the suite late that afternoon to meet the just-risen Ringo and bonus Beatle Paul. WABC had Cousin Brucie, Dan Ingram, and Scott Muni broadcasting live on both radio and TV to cover the exchange.

Hindle With Care

Maurice Hindle writes:

"In 1968, I was 23 and approaching the end of my first term at Keele University. On the afternoon of 2 December, I emerged with Daniel Wiles, a fellow student, from Weybridge railway station into the wintry stillness of Surrey's stockbroker belt, having hitch-hiked all the way from Staffordshire. We were there to interview John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

I had read about their first performance-art event together back in June, when they planted acorns for peace at Coventry Cathedral, and continued to be intrigued by the couple's exploits. Since then, John and Yoko had been getting flak in the British press. That October, they had been caught in a drugs bust at a flat in London belonging to Ringo Starr. In the aftermath, Tariq Ali's radical newspaper Black Dwarf published an angry "open letter", which accused Lennon of selling out to the establishment and claimed that the Beatles' music had "lost its bite". I felt it was time to counter the growing feeling against John and Yoko, so I wrote to Lennon, via the magazine Beatles Monthly, outlining my ideas for an interview. To my surprise, he replied.

Outside Weybridge station, a Mini Cooper with smoked-glass windows skidded to a halt, like something out of The Italian Job. In the driver's seat was Lennon, looking much as he does in the colour photograph included with the Beatles' 1968 White Album: faded blue Levi's jacket, white T-shirt and jeans, dirty white sneakers, his shoulder-length hair parted in the middle, and wearing the now famous "granny glasses". We students crammed into the back of the Mini and John drove us up the bumpy private road that led to his house, Kenwood.

In the sitting room at the back of the house, we sat down on thick-pile Indian carpets around a low table, cross-legged. Yoko said little, as we all knew this was primarily John's day - and he said a lot. Apart from a short break, when Yoko fed us macrobiotic bread and jams she had made, Lennon talked continuously for six hours."

Here are 16 minutes of excerpts from the Hindle/Wiles/Lennon interview. Note that the traditional dating of this recording is December 3rd, 1968, not the 2nd as Hindle writes above.

Reporter Jacob Defis spoke with The Beatles backstage at the Finsbury Park Astoria, during the run of their first Beatles Christmas Show. The result was aired on Bulletin From Britain, apparently a radio series produced for broadcast in UK territories such as Australia (but not the motherland).

You Ottawa Been There

BEATLE CRUSADES, FANS WAIT IN THE RAIN

Published in The Ottawa Journal, Wednesday, June 4, 1969
By David Yates

Dressed in all-white suits, Beatle John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono brought their crusade for peace to Ottawa Tuesday and urged their followers to sell it like merchandise -- by using advertising.

"You must plug peace and make it known as an alternative to war," Mr. Lennon told a select group of 50 students and reporters at a University of Ottawa seminar sponsored by the students union.

The Lennons and daughter Kyoko arrived in Ottawa late in the afternoon after a drive from Montreal where the couple had just finished a week-long bed-in campaigning for peace from a hotel suite.

They were due to appear on the lawn of the university's administration building at 4 p.m., but that was put back to 4:30 and just before then an announcement was made to several hundred waiting youngsters that the Lennons would not be making the scene until 6:30 p.m. because of "a mechanical breakdown."

But the Lennons feinted them right out of their shoes and arrived at the arts building at 5 p.m.

They went straight into discussion on a panel which included actor-CBC personality Bruno Gerussi, Colin Wells, chairman of the university's classics department, Martin Loney, president of the Canadian Union of Students, and Al Rock, president of the university's student union.

Youngsters were left standing in the rain until the Lennons made a brief appearance at 7 p.m. outside the administration building.

The couple have been trying to avoid the younger crowds during their stay in Canada to speak to the news media and reach as many people as possible, it has been explained.

During the panel discussion and press conference which followed John and Yoko lashed radicals who love peace and refuse to try to convince the "squares."

"They (the radicals) are just snobs," said John and Yoko at different times.

"Use the system and don't be snobs about peace," John declared.

As examples, he said he and American comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory have been able to infiltrate the system, make money and spread their messages.

"They (people who run the system) are more greedy than they are prejudiced," he said.

In other comments John declared "cops are human" and "all prime ministers compromise their principles to get where they are -- even the best."

John had hoped to meet Prime Minister Trudeau during his stay in Canada, but the prime minister's office said he was too busy to meet the Beatle.

On August 1st, 1966, Paul was a guest on Frost's BBC Radio series, David Frost At The Phonograph, discussing "Eleanor Rigby" and chatting between other discs:

The Worst Beatles LP Ever

Ah, Ed Rudy. If he was the Fifth Beatle, I am the Fifth Rutle.

The nadir of his cash-in albums was also the last. After two decent interview/press conference LPs (and one featuring the Stones) came the masterpiece pictured above, in 1965.

Probably released around August to cash in on the US tour, it contained a genuine Beatles concert recording, from Atlantic City, August 30th, 1964!

As you'll hear, it was an audience recording, but it was complete - and otherwise unbootlegged!

Oh yeah, the music was a little distant and hard to hear beneath the screams, so Ed hired a group called The Liverpool Lads to sweeten up the recordings. But you can tell the Lads were intimately familiar with the material, and enthusiastic about being in the studio!

Well, perhaps not, but to make up for that, Ed threw in a lengthy revealing conversation with a famous British manager of a pop group talking about the travails of dealing with hotels, fans, and the press!

OK, so it's not Brian Epstein (I have no idea if it's supposed to be someone imitating him or just the Liverpool Lads' unfortunate representative). But who cares? This album only costs a couple of bucks!

What's that you say? It only sold about 70 copies in 1965 and most of those were destroyed by incensed consumers after hearing the first 2 minutes, and now it's so rare, it'll cost a couple of hundred dollars IF you can find it?

Fear not.... or actually, if you plan to play these files, be VERY afraid. Without further ado:

For Ed Sullivan + Peter Noone

On May 19th, 1966, The Beatles spent all afternoon at EMI Studio 1 videotaping promotional clips for both sides of their new single, "Paperback Writer" and "Rain". The mimed performances were aired on Ready, Steady, Go! and Goodbye Lucky Stars in the UK, and (with a special introduction) The Ed Sullivan Show in the US:

After a dinner break, they moved to Studio 3 to complete work on Paul's ballad "For No One", overdubbing bass, tambourine, and Alan Civil's French horn parts. Here is a 1983 "monitor mix" of the final take being played back from the multitrack, with various elements isolated:

Symphony Men

On June 25th, 1967, The Beatles represented Great Britain and recorded their new single, "All You Need Is Love", live in front of a potential 400 million viewers.

The broadcast, entitled Our World, was seen in 31 countries. Here's some of CBC's coverage as seen in Canada.

The Beatles' performance sounded like this in Japan.

And it looked like this:

Here's the original outro to The Beatles' segment.

And finally, the studio recording of the mono feed to the BBC's mobile van, with extra material after the cameras had switched off.
