Texas Two-Step

The Beatles held two press conferences in the state of Texas. The first took place at Dallas Memorial Auditorium on September 18th, 1964, near the end of their summer tour of North America.

One year later, they faced the press at the Sheraton-Lincoln hotel in Houston. A bit of the conference was captured on film; later that day (August 19th, 1965), they performed two raucous shows at the Sam Houston Coliseum.

Get A Job, Cop!

The Beatles' first visit to Philadelphia took place on September 2nd, 1964. Prior to their concert at Convention Hall, they were interviewed backstage by Charlie Murdock, a DJ from WQAM Radio in Miami. Murdock took the opportunity to pass along greetings from police sergeant Buddy Dresner, The Beatles' minder during their February stay in Miami Beach.

E. H. Eric

On June 30th, 1966, The Beatles performed their first concert in Japan. On the way down from their suite to a press conference at the Tokyo Hilton, they filmed a TV interview with "E. H. Eric", who would be the master of ceremonies that night at the Budokan Hall. The brief interview also circulates on video, with a totally out-of-sync soundtrack.

Let The Feasting Begin!

The Beatles' first press conference on US soil was by far the most covered and one of the more energetic, spontaneous, and chaotic of their career. Shortly after landing at JFK airport in New York on February 7th, 1964, they lined up in front of a Pan Am Airlines backdrop and faced a room packed with newspaper, radio, newsreel, TV, and magazine reporters. As press officer Brian Sommerville did his best to field questions, The Beatles fired back snappy and disarming rejoinders.

Here is a composite recording of the event, assembled from over a dozen audio and video sources.

TM on TV, Part 2

Audience response to John and George's 1967 appearance on The Frost Programme was so well-received that Frost invited them back on October 4th to further discuss Transcendental Meditation.

This time, other guests were on the panel, including TM proponents John Allison and Nick Clark. Taking up the opposing (or at least highly skeptical) viewpoint was writer John Mortimer. John and George weren't exactly persuasive in their counterarguments, with George coming off condescending and John merely cranky.

TM on TV, Part 1

After the twin triumphs of Sgt. Pepper and "All You Need Is Love", The Beatles were bound to hit a fallow patch, especially after the death of Brian Epstein. In addition to filming the ill-fated Magical Mystery Tour and opening the even iller-fated Apple Boutique, they spent the autumn of 1967 learning Transcendental Meditation from the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, with only George seeming completely devoted.

He and John appeared on The Frost Programme September 29th to promote the practice of TM, explaining the discipline to a skeptical but patient David Frost. They would make a more contentious return the following week.
